Walter Payton book paints disturbing picture of Bears legend

He popped painkillers like candy and covered his body with a topical gel used on horses when he played professional football. When Walter Payton retired, he took even more painkillers.
He kept a mistress for years and had other extramarital affairs, even while he publicly maintained he was happily married to his longtime wife, Connie.
At his Hall of Fame induction — which should have been a highlight in his life — his wife sat in the front row. And his flight attendant girlfriend sat in the second. His longtime assistant was in charge of keeping them apart. Payton was miserable.
And in retirement, he constantly told friends he wanted to kill himself, at one point even holding a gun while telling his agent of his dark plans.
So claims a new biography of the Chicago Bears’ legend,Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton, which is scheduled to be released next week .
The book paints a startling picture of the career and post-retirement days of the NFL’s one-time leading rusher and one of the game’s all-time greats.
But best-selling author Jeff Pearlman also lays out a far more complicated portrait of a man who many in Chicago still idolize 12 years after his death from a rare liver disease — a portrait that is at times poignant and heart-wrenching and at other times unflattering and salacious.
“He was addicted to laughter,” Kimm Tucker, former executive director of Payton’s foundation, says of her boss in the book. Payton would often insist on first playing catch with kids who asked him for autographs and then offer them words of inspiration.

"There's nobody like Andy, and there never will be. He'll hate hearing this, but he's an American original," Jeff Fager, the executive producer of60 Minutes, told CBS News. "His contributions to 60 Minutes are immeasurable; he's also a great friend. It's harder for him to do it every week, but he will always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minutes when the urge hits him."

Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson gets second chance at Fox News GOP debate

After being excluded from every GOP presidential debate since May, the former New Mexico governor has gotten into tonight’s Fox News confab in Orlando over the objections of the Florida GOP. Now he has to do something with his big chance.

In the May debate, Johnson looked uncomfortable throughout, complaining about not getting enough questions and then giving weak, forgettable responses when he did. For fans, the performance was a disappointment. For those who had never heard of Johnson, it was not an incentive to learn more. Since then, the candidate has all but disappeared, popping up only to complain about being excluded and to announce his latest bike race.
Tonight’s debate gives Johnson a chance to start over with his strongest argument — that he’s a Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) with results.

Facebook changes see the social network trying to be more social

In the lead-up to the f8 conference, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg unveils more new features for the site – but the initial reaction around the net is far from positive

Mark Zuckerberg must have something big up his sleeve for Thursday's f8. Facebook on Tuesday night unveiled the third – and biggest – update to the social network in 10 days, with a real-time "ticker" that you might have read about in the Guardian on Monday.
The live ticker shows what you're friends are talking about right now. From Thursday, this is where you'll be able to see what your friends are listening to, reading or watching this moment.
It's an unobtrusive little box in the top-right corner, meaning News Feed displays only the "Top Stories" from the last day – turning Facebook into "your own personal newspaper", says Facebook engineer Mark Tokelowitz.

Kate Walsh explains her raunchy side...

The biggest surprise of theComedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen was seeing actress Kate Walsh walk onstage. The next biggest surprise was listening to thePrivate Practice star throw out off-color jokes from the podium.
Could Walsh be unleashing her raunchy side?
"I do have a little bit of raunch," Walsh told USA TODAY. "I'm half-Irish after all. So come on."
Walsh admitted it might be a big shock for fans of her show to see her R-rated roast session (which will be broadcast Sept. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT). When asked what they should know before tuning in, she replied with a laugh: "Viewer discretion advised. I'd say, take it easy everybody, it's a little bit of a bumpy ride," Walsh said, before using words like "filthy," "naughty" and "dirty" to describe the evening dedicated to bashing Sheen. These are words not normally associated with Walsh.
Throughout the Saturday night roast, roastmaster Seth MacFarlane continually asked Walsh, "What are you doing here?" from the stage. Onstage she explained that she was using her television medical expertise to analyze the outrageous personalities on the stage -- from Sheen to William Shatner to Mike Tyson.
But afterwards Walsh said it was all about comedy, adding that she started her career in improv.
"And it was a good exercise in masochism to come up here," Walsh said. Though she added that she came out "relatively unscathed" by the other comics -- and Sheen -- despite some of the comedy bombs thrown at her during the roast.
Walsh admitted that when she agreed to do the gig she had at least one sleepless night. "I was like, 'Oh my God, what am I doing," she said. "I have never done a roast before."
But at the end, she was all smiles backstage. "No regrets," said Walsh. "You never want to rest on your laurels. You want to keep doing things that terrify you."

The statues have been handed out. "Modern Family" swept. "Mad Men" dominated. But backstage, it wasn't all bravado from the stars of those shows, or any of the other Emmy winning programs. Below, check out how Julie Bowen, Kate Winslet, Melissa McCarthy, Martin Scorsese and more reflected on their victories backstage.

Michaele Salahi abducted? No, just on a Journey

Tareq Salahi and his wife Michaele Salahi, reality TV stars who gained infamy as the so-called White House gate crashers, grabbed headlines on Wednesday when he reported his wife was abducted, and she later contacted law enforcement officials to say she was fine and didn't want him to know her whereabouts.
A spokeswoman for the rock band Journey said Michaele and the group's guitarist Neal Schon were together in Memphis for a concert. "Nobody kidnapped her," said the spokeswoman.
The FBI and law enforcement officials are investigating.
The mix-up, if that is what it was, began late Tuesday when Tareq Salahi contacted local authorities claiming Michaele was missing and had left their house without taking any belongings. He believed she was abducted, according to media reports.
But in a news conference outside the Salahi residence on Wednesday afternoon, a sheriff's official from Warren County, Virginia said Michaele Salahi told their department she left with a good friend, was where she wanted to be and did not want her husband to know, according to Kris Van Cleave, a reporter for the local ABC TV station, who spoke to Reuters.

Missoni for target collection, missoni for target, missoni for target online, sarah hyland, target online

Demand for Missoni line so hot, it crashes

Target's Web site

Talk about a shopping nightmare!
Fashionistas in search of clothing, housewares, bedding and everything else from Target's designer collaboration with Missoni were left with empty shelves and racks as the collection blew out of the store within hours of appearing. The incredible demand also crashed the store's Web site for much of Tuesday.
But fear not, design divas: More merchandise is on the way.
At least two well-traveled metro stores -- Target Greatland in Troy and the Target in Madison Heights -- could have more stock on shelves and racks as early as Thursday morning.
The collection by the storied Italian design house known for knitwear and iconic zigzag patterns debuted Tuesday morning to enthusiastic shoppers; women piled carts full of clothing and everything else.
"We had around 30 to 40 people at the doors this morning," said Ashley Keinath, a manager at Target Greatland, who added the store was mostly sold out within an hour. "There were guests who had multiple carts with multiple items. ... All day, the team was talking about how it felt like Christmas, the day after Thanksgiving."
Said shopper Lisa Maas, 47, of Royal Oak who owns a public relations firm: "I had a meeting this morning and I got out of my meeting at 9:30 and was very close to ... the store. I thought, 'This is great. I'm just going to pop in here and leave.' I walked in, there was nothing on the rack. I thought, 'Why didn't they set up the rack?' I asked one of the associates and she said, 'It's already gone.' "
Later, Maas was able to get onto the store Web site. "I got the duvet set, shower curtains, towels and some items of clothing. I'm really excited," she said.
Bridget LaForest, 43, of Warren said she stopped at the Warren Target on her lunch break.
"I went looking for a tote bag, a scarf and a cardigan, but was looking forward to seeing the entire collection," she said. "They had some very picked-over kids' clothes, a couple women's knit skirts. In the linens department there was one comforter, a couple serving trays and canisters. ... It's a bit surprising more stock isn't available as this line was advertised in both magazines and TV commercials."
The Target store in Brighton fared a little better. By midafternoon it still had about 20 mugs, a few scarves and an assortment of shoes.
Target collaborates frequently with high-end design houses. Missoni was founded in 1953 by the husband-and-wife team Ottavio and Rosita Missoni. But none of the other Target collaborations have been as popular or as expansive as the one with Missoni.
Dresses in the Missoni for Target collection are less than $60. Dresses carrying the Missoni label typically cost more than $1,000 at stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. Dresses in Missoni's less-expensive line, M Missoni, tend to start in the $600 range.
Target's Missoni collection includes everything from scarves ($19.99) to a bicycle ($399.99).
It also includes clothing for babies and girls (the knit cape is darling); lingerie; clothing, shoes and accessories for women; clothing for men (very handsome silk jacquard ties for $24.99); mugs, dishes and serving pieces; bedding; bath towels, and pillows.
Much of Target's Missoni collection is available -- at super-inflated prices -- on eBay.com. The ballet flats that retail for $29.99 were marked up to $129.99 on eBay.
The collection is to be available through Oct. 22 at all Target stores and target.com. Select pieces from the collection are to be available through early December at target.com.

Miss Angola becomes first from her country to be crowned Miss Universe
Leila Lopes made history for her country yesterday, after becoming the very first Miss Angola to be crowned Miss Universe.

The 25-year-old laughed and smiled as she hugged runner-up Miss Ukraine, Olesia Stefanko, before having her crown firmly placed on her head at the pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The business student from Angola’s seaside city of Beguela, dazzled the panel of judges with both her beauty and brains.

When she had been asked earlier what she might change about her physical characteristics, Leila replied that she was satisfied with who she was.
'I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty,' she told the judges and the audience.

'I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family, and I plan to follow those through the rest of my life.'
Her down-to-earth nature was complemented with immense outer beauty too though, which she showed off in a bright yellow bikini during the swimsuit parade.

After displaying her bikini body to millions of fans watching the pageant on TV around the world, Lopes paraded around the stage with poise in a form-fitting gold and silver sequinned evening gown.
Miss Angola bet 88 competitors in the 60th annual Miss Universe pageant.
Finalists accompanying Lopes into the top five were Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup, Miss China Luo Zilin and Miss Brazil Priscila Machado.
While the other countries that made the top ten were Miss Australia Scherri-lee Biggs, Miss Costa Rica Johanna Solano, Miss France Laury Thilleman, Miss Portugal Laura Goncalves and Miss Panama Sheldry Saez.

As well as competing in categories ranging from swimsuits to evening gowns, the women also had to answer the critical question that tells the judges a bit about them.
In fan voting, Lopes tallied only a 3.6 score for the swimsuit but earned a 7.2 for her evening gown.
Fan voting, however, did not count in the final tallies from nine judges.
The panelists, who ranged from race car driver Helio Castroneves to actress Vivica A. Fox and journalist Connie Chung, scored the women on each contest, narrowing from a group of 16 down to a final five.

Out of the past 13 pageants held in the past decade, seven have been won by Latina contestants, making Miss Angola’s win even more exciting for her home country.
Miss Angola started competing in the Miss Universe competitions in 1998, with the first ever contestant from the African nation being Emilia Guardado.
Since 1997, two Miss Angolas have been semi-finalists in the top 15 and one made it into the top 10, but Leila Lopes is the first to be crowned with the title.
